Artist Identity

The artist for my track is myself, i am a student and i like to be different, my stage name is Vince Anthony. In the video i will be playing Vince Anthony, who is basically a character that i want to represent my music. He don't like conforming to social norms, so i want my video to be a bit strange and psychedelic. However i am trying to appeal to a slightly more mainstream audience, so it has to contain conventions that appeal to them as well. So i will be having shots of me playing and singing the song, it would also be helpful if i could get some girls to be in the video so it would help attract a bigger male audience. The video will be a journey of the Vince Anthony and a few of his friends, partying and living a free spirited life, this will appeal more to the younger spectrum of my target audience ie university students etc, because they are at that age where they get to experience their freedom so much more, and experiment with life. I want to Vince Anthony to come across as a care free, down to earth guy, who is wise but doesn't mind doing silly things because he enjoys all walks of life. I also want him to have an air of mystery, so the audience don't know that much about his personal life, hes a bit quiet and likes to fly under the radar a bit. He is not superficial or materialistic, and i think this  is appealing to some members of the audience because it seems like so many artists are materialistic and false, it especially appeals to the hippie side of my audience, because hippies are not materialistic.
His style can be defined as easy to listen to, with a catchy tune and a raw sounding voice. On all of my albums and Merchandise, ill have the name in the same font, this is my logo, and audiences will instantly recognize the artist brand, simply by the logo, and perhaps something that the artist wears, for example, Michael Jackson and his black shoes with white socks. Vince Anthonys brand clothes will be a hat and glasses, and usually  a half a suit to go with, or hat and glasses with really colorful clothes that look a bit ragged. If Vince Anthony dresses quirky i feel this could also be a selling point in the case of his brand identity, because it seems audiences like it when artists dress weird, for example - Lady Ga Ga, i wont dress as outrageously as her, but it is a style that has developed along with the music. This ties in with Roland Barthes theory of symbolism, people know instantly from an artists symbol everything the artist is about, a picture says a thousand words. So in my video, the cocaine symbolizes the actual feeling of lust, which is a very strong sometimes aggressive feeling that can make a person do crazy things, just like cocaine. When ever there is a picture of Vince, it will usually be him with a guitar looking somberly and knowingly at the camera, seeming a bit distant, in his own head. Another part of his brand identity, is that he plays all the instruments, and does all of the recording and producing himself, this gives him another sub audience of people that do the same, and people that like other genres of music that he does will hear his style in them, so that's like a signature on a song.

Below is an image that i made as an example to show the brand identity, and the logo.

Target Audience

Target Audience

The song i am thinking of having as my track for my music video is called Purple Epidemic, it is a song that i wrote and recorded myself. I think the target audience would be for white males and females between the ages of 18 and 32. They would be liberal minded, not conforming to social norms, many of them university students who occasionally dabble in psychedelics, but you could call them hippies. I think this because of the way the track sounds and i feel it would relate most to these people. Because it is a fairly large spread of people, there would be a mix of employed and unemployed people, because i have been in and out of employment, so i understand both situations, and because the artist i.e me is a student, they would be able to relate to that, because many of them would be students themselves.I have been using a music sharing website called SoundCloud to publish my music and see what kind of feedback it would get in terms of attitudes to the song and what type of audience it would attract, Generally it was a mix of the above description from both England, Poland and New York. This can then also be linked to your Facebook page and your you tube page, basically any pages you have on media sharing websites, so that people can find you more easily, and all your branded things are in one place.
On my Facebook page it tells me the demographics of the age of people that are attracted to my music, these results are what i predicted

Above are some screenshots i took from my soundcloud, the top is the demographics of how many plays ive had recently. I have been innactive for some time on this account, becaus ei have started undertaking other projects.

Psychedelic camera effects

Fractal Noise

For My end product, id like it to have a phsycadelic feel in some parts of the story. My idea is to have some performance based shots of the artist and a story line running alongside it of a mans all to real hallucination. To create a sort of pulsating wave effect over the film i will use a technique called fractal noise.
Here is an example
                                        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTNCBXLJ4Dc

                                        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWLHTJF4dCM
The software i will be using is Adobe After Effects, it is a program designed specifically for adding effects to footage after it has been edited, and so i am going to try and exploit some of these features, its going to be a challenge because ive only used the program once to edit a video. Therefore i will be using YouTube tutorial videos to learn how to do it.
Effects that i have previously used to get a phsycadelic effect are colour enhancements - I play around with the colour, contrast, hue and saturation effects till i looks something like this

Swirling vortex effect, when the outer edges or the entire picture is swirling fast like a vortex, this creates a very phsycadellic effect which distorts the audiences perception, i will be using this effect again.
This is a still i made in photoshop

So, this is a test video that i made, unfortunately its not the best filming, because it was my dad filming, but it illustrates my point of the type of effects im going to use. It was filmed on my mobile phone, and was edited on Adobe After effects, so the quality is  also not that good.

Coventions of an Acoustic rock video

Conventions of an Acoustic Rock music video

Shots of the artist singing and or playing his instrument or playing a performance as a band

The locations are usually isolated lonely places like woods or abandoned warehouses, the locations can also represent people they are singing about

Often times there is a storyline going alongside the artist shots, this can relate to the song, or it could be totally random

The camera movements and shot types help to build up certain effects that go hand in hand with the song, for example a slow song will have slow cuts and slow long panning shots,  this reinforces the feel of the song, and can also be used to make it more sad. Whereas fast paced shots create a sense of tension and wildness.

A very good example of an acoustic music video, is guns n roses patience. The video shows performance based shots of the band recording the song in a studio, with a romantic story running alongside it, which is set in a hotel. Then the long slow panning shots really help to bring out the sincerity and emotion of the song. Of course, there is also a shot of the all important guitar solo, which is key to the genre of rock and acoustic rock.
